Where I stayed
Our next port of call was Shanghai. We caught an overnight train from Guilin for £30 each in a 6 person sleeper cabin. Travel is not especially cheap in China however food and drink is extremely well priced. We have had many meals including a drink for £1.50 each! This is of course if we can find somewhere with food we can stomach/understand a menu...
Anyway we were half dreading the train fearing our Chinese travel companions would be spitting everywhere, eating disgusting smelly food and generally scaring the bjesus out of us. Surprisingly the journey was fine though our Chinese crew did talk VERY LOUDLY and often about who was making the next pot of green tea.
So we arrived in Shanghai fairly well rested and had a mooch about for a few days.
We ventured to the Shanghai Museum which was fairly interesting, and strangely they had an exhibition on Swiss Alpine paintings. We had just received our confirmation of working in a Swiss Chalet this winter so it was quite a coincidence!
The Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe is well regarded so we booked tickets to go one night. Cirque De Soleil it ain't and at times it felt extremely cheesy with its childish gags. However the acrobats were very impressive and it was still a good night out.
Another day we took a self guided walking tour which was great - the skyline view from the Bund (the city's riverfront area) is magnificent. We also visited the French Concession area with its cute backstreets and kitsch shops and restaurants.
Shanghai is a lot prettier than some of the other places we have been in China. Roads seem cleaner and the less raucous Chinese behaviour indiate that there is a lot more money here than more southerly towns. Crass as it is to mention, the streets here don't smell of urine like most other places too!
It is often called 'Paris of the East', but we didn't really agree with that - it's a fantastic city but China has a LONG way to go before it can be compared with anywhere in the West.
Bye for now!
