It was pretty exciting to wake up in California today. It's also pretty neat to think that we crossed the border yesterday from Nevada at 8000 ft. above sea level. This morning, we went around Pine Mountain at Clear Lake at 4420 ft. above sea level and are presently sitting at our campsite in on the Northern coast at 25 ft. above sea level.
We left Yuba City at 7AM. The beginning of the drive took us through beautiful, flat farm country and orchard areas- really similar to what we would drive through at home, except for the Palm trees! Shortly after this we began an uphill climb that took us through a series of small communities on a large lake called Clear Lake. The towns of Lucerne and Nice were beautiful and seeing all the homes built so high in the mountains was really quite incredible. For the most part, the speed limit for our 4 hour drive was less than 40 mph. When we turned onto Highway 20 the road was extremely windy and all downhill. Our speed for most of the remaining trip was 30-35 mph. This is the area we that began to see very large trees. Jennifer didn't do so well with the turns and she had to take Gravol to deal with her distress!! Needless to say she zonked out for most of the day and is now just recovering.
We are staying at MacKerricher State Park right on the ocean. We can hear the sound of the waves from our campsite and can walk to the beach in two minutes. The weather is cool hear. The beaches are rugged and the waves are very strong-so strong that you can't swim in this area. You probably wouldn't want to since the water is like ice water!
We've walked the beach twice today and both times were able to view several seals sunbathing on the rocks. The girls went down tonight and also some large jelly fish. We are close to many small towns-the closest being Fort Bragg which has many amenities-no Walmart or big malls though. There is a Starbucks!
Tomorrow we plan a drive down the coast and will visit a few small towns along the way.
It is really beautiful here and we are looking forward to the next 4 days of our stay.
Talk to you soon.
