We took the Duquesne Incline and were wow'ed by the view. You could see the meeting of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River whose joining forms the Ohio River. I hadn't realised how many bridges there were. Did you know that there are 10 in the downtown area alone? How was I to know that Pittsburgh was known as the City of Bridges? Sheesh!
We moved onto the University of Pittsburgh and visited the Cathedral of Learning. Yes I know...another uni campus....what can I say? In some ways I hanker for those student days again ...but I digress. The campus was right in the middle of town and this place was one of the must dos recommended by those travel websites
No time to dilly dally and we are on the road again (note the country misic reference!) and head towards Fallingwater, the location of the last house that we were visiting. The drive was through some lovely country, a state park, away from the city. The house is set in the middle of a forest and a stream runs under it....stunning. Google it and you'll see what I mean.
About an hour later we hit the road again and stop at a small cafe where we noticed some Harleys parked out the front. The most unassuming place for the yummiest sandwiches. Looking out we noticed bushwalkers and people with canoes going by. The americans love their outdoors and it is easy to see why.
Then we do our detour thing again and drive towards Gettysburg, but not by the main highway. The country backroads are definitely the way to go with rolling hills, interesting scenery and just good driving. Little did we know that the road we were on was part of the Lincoln Highway which goes all the way from San Francisco to New York City. Parts of the route we took was also along the route that the Confederates took to get to that fateful battle in Gettysburg.
That night the Country Music Awards was on tv...and lol! Some of the songs we recognised as we'd heard them on the radio. Our plans to do a segway tour on Thursday was stymied by the weather....rain. So, no images of me face planting.
