We stayed in Newport, Rhode Island for the night. This morning, we drove around town. You could smell and see money everywhere. Huge mansions, expensive cars....nicely manicured yards and lawns, fancy yachts....this is how the other half live.
Did you know that Rhode Island is the smallest state in the US and has the most number of historic mansions? I reckon we saw a few of them.
We drove around Providence...a quaint seaside town that reeks of money and to Fall River (that doesn't) to visit the Battle Cove Museum.
There was something going on called 'Overnighters'. It looked like a stack of boy Scouts/cubs or whatever were going on board with their sleeping bags...yep they were going to sleep in the sleeping quarters on board the ship! And they were gerting tours, etc...you could hear the 'wows'..and 'cool'...and 'sweet' constantly.
Even though I only saw the USS Constitution from afar and wandered around the insides of the modern battleship, there was a different aura about both vessels. I 'liked' the old sailing ship. Horrible thing to say but it was nobler, more regal and authentic. I guess the battleship was metal, impersonal and so much more lethal, and thus efficient...and effective (!) Of course, the newer vessel wasn't as cramped and had modern facilities (do you know they had their own ice cream and soda making machine on board?), so if you had to choose, you'd go for the battleship.
Anyway, am now in our room Motel 6 at Wethersfield, catching up with you guys, the Red Sox are on TV, trying to win so that they get to the World Series...its been another good day. The scenery along the way has been beautiful with so much reds and oranges bursting through. Many trees are already in that yellowish colour or no leaves at all.
Talking about baseball... No lets not....
Tomorrow we head into Hartford and then onto the backroads to see the countryside and continue northwards.
