A gray and windy day greeted us for Thursday. We spent about 3 hours at the Intrepid, Air, Sea and Space Museum. Wandering around an old air craft carrier, looking at planes, a submarine (great name of a Growler!) and seeing the Enterprise space shuttle and a Concorde up close wasn't too bad a way of spending a few hours out of the elements. The best bits for me were reading and looking at the personal memorabillia and artefacts and listening to the old fellas who served on the ship share their stories and knowledge so willingly. Seeing the Enterprise (the only space shuttle that didn't make it to space) and finding out about all of the 'inventions' that have become so common place in daily life was pretty cool. As for the technical stuff?
Did you know that the space shuttle was supposed to be called Constitution but after a petition from Star Trekkers, its name was changed to Enterprise? Save that for trivia night.
As a museum, it had lots of interesting interactive exhibits, a lot of history, and even more recent references. See photo of a Tomcat -no- not Tom and Katie, but of the type of plane that starred in Tom Gun.
We then ran across to Pier 83 to catch a cruise around the island. A relaxing way to spend another couple of hours-looking at Manhattan across the Hudsn River gives you a different perspective. See some of the highlights.
The next exciting event was the arrival of Hannah and her friend Cheira at Penn Station. Some of you may know that there is a Comic Con thing happening here in NYC.
Guess who I saw whilst waiting? Does Ash Ketchum mean anything to anyone?
The train was late....who would have guessed.
Took the girls to Times Square...and here's a picture.
Finally got back to our apartment after 1am. Line up for the shower!
Being in an apartment on the ground floor means hearing, literally, all of the comings and goings in the building. Mornings are a real....nightmare for some light sleepers. For the rest of us, it matters not!
