Just days after the Live 8 concerts earthwide rocked the world in peaceful protest to poverty in Africa, a more gruesome demonstration "rocked" London.

Four explosions hit three subway stations and a double-decker bus in rapid succession between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. local time. At least 37 people were killed and more than 700 were injured.

They are being called "terrorist attacks" after a posted a claim of responsibility said the blasts were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I suppose if you are traveling it may be wise to contact home, as family and friends tend to worry when tragedy strikes. Even if you are not or should not have been in the area, it may be a good idea just to touch base. As well, if you live in London you may want to send out a group email to let your overseas friends know you are ok. I am so relieved when I see one of my UK friends pop up on messenger or in my email box. A common conversation I have had today was "Oh my god! I hope so-and-so is ok!!"

A friend of mine from London just wrote:

"Has been a reall odd experience. I work about 200 metres from Aldgate station where one of the train bombs went off and I only found out about it from the internet. We were advised not to leave the building, so spent most of the day going about our work as usual - and getting occasional "updates" from people who had passed by the 3rd floor which is full of TV screens.

People have left work early to walk home - some people are planning to walk right across London - and the streets are packed, but the roads empty except for police and emergency services.

(My Husband) got off his bus at Aldgate and say lots of stunned people - he works for the City of London Police in IT has spent his day setting up an emergency morgue - which thankfully wasn't needed.

Guess the enormity of what happened will take a while to sink in."

Home just in time
Hey Carmella -

Just wanted to let you know that John and I are home now safe and sound. We were in London less than a week ago, at some of the places that were hit. We are thanking our lucky stars (and our angels) that we were kept safe.

Jenn
