I finished driving to Chicago and checked into my hotel. I spent a little time in my room before heading for Blackbird, where I had a dinner reservation. When I got near Blackbird I started driving around hunting for parking. I found two spots next to each other and pulled into the second one. When I walked over to the machine where you pay for parking the person who had parked in the other spot almost immediately asked me why I had parked in the spot that was a tow-away zone for the next half hour. I quickly realized I hadn't yet adjusted my watch for Central Time. I left and found another parking space.

When I was on Central Time I realized I was over an hour early for dinner. I had heard about a nearby bar called Red Kiva that has something called vaportinis where the alcohol is boiled off and inhaled. Since I had time to kill I thought I'd give it a try so I walked over to Red Kiva. Unfortunately, they don't do the vaportinis themselves. I'm not sure whether things have changed or whether the article I read was wrong or just misleading but, if I understood the person at the bar correctly, and there's a very good chance I didn't because it was rather noisy and the person wasn't entirely clear, they now only serve vaportinis when the people who sell the apparatus for vaporizing and inhaling the alcohol host a vaportini evening at their bar. I headed for Blackbird.

I hoped Blackbird would be able to take me an hour early and fortunately, they could but only at the bar, which was fine with me. I asked for both the standard and vegetarian tasting menus. They bill it as an 8-course tasting menu but there are actually 10 courses listed on both menus. I ordered eight of the courses from the vegetarian menu and two from their standard menu.

Sitting at the bar gave me an opportunity to talk to some other people. I found out from two women from L.A. that were next to me that there was some restaurant association convention this past week.  As a result, hundreds of restaurant people are in town and reservations are very hard to come by. I'm glad I made reservations early. 

I enjoyed my meal, overall, although there were a couple courses that were disappointing. I headed back to my hotel and turned in early so I can get moving early tomorrow for the Wright Plus event.
