I checked out and headed across the street to Ueno Station. I had to catch a local train to Tokyo Station in order to catch a shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. I had a reservation but I arrived at Tokyo Station early enough I changed it for one on an earlier train. I headed for the platform and waited for my train. It was nice not having as much luggage but the new suitcase doesn't work nearly as well as my old one when I try to balance my duffle bag on top of it. It was still relatively easy getting around with the reduced weight though.
The train to Kyoto takes a bit under three hours. After I arrived I headed across the street to where I'll be staying, the Kyoto Tower Hotel. I stayed there when I was in Kyoto the first time about 10 years ago. One of the things I was looking forward to was going up in the Kyoto Tower, which is on top of the hotel, That's not going to happen this time. It's closed for renovations. I checked in, left things in my room and headed out.
I decided to go to Nishi Hongan-ji, a Buddhist temple in the neighborhood. It was late in the day by the time I got there. As I wandered around they started closing up. I ran around quickly and headed out before they chased me out.
After leaving the temple I went back to Kyoto Station. I hunted around for Yodobashi Camera. It turns out, it's next to my hotel. A few days ago when I tried to use the Angle Finder (a piece that attaches to the eyepiece of the camera that lets you look into it with your eye at a 90-degree angle to the eyepiece) I discovered that it wasn't possible to use it with my new camera. I was hoping that a good camera store would have whatever I needed to be able to use them together.
I discovered that the Angle Finder is sold with two adapters including the one I need. For some reason my new camera, which is an updated version of my old one, uses the other of the two adapters. I'm sure I have the other adapter at home somewhere but I didn't know I needed to bring it. I asked the people at the store to check on the price and delivery time to buy another one. I have to come back tomorrow to get the answer.
I headed back to Kyoto Station to look for food. There's a large department store the has a floor of restaurants. I wound up at an Italian place again.
