I got moving earlier than usual today. I headed for Odori Park to try once more to get pictures with the sunlight on the fronts of the sculptures that face east. I was only partially successful. It was very crowded today and it seems that nearly everyone had to stop and pose in front of many of the sculptures. When in a group they frequently take turns being the photographer, who naturally has to take a picture with each person's camera, which can take a while. The standard pose among the Japanese is making a peace signs. By the time I got to the last of the 12 blocks it was well after noon.
I decided to take the Metro to the Sapporo Community Dome aka the Tsudome for the part of the festival I just found out about yesterday. Although I had been told that my Suica Card would work here it didn't, at least not for the Metro. After someone came and removed my Suica Card from the turnstile it had jammed I was directed toward the fare machines. It took me a while to figure out their fare machines but I eventually got a ticket and was on my way.
I got off the Metro at the station closest to the Tsudome. Someone in the station told me that I could take a free shuttle bus or walk the 750 meters. I decided to walk and figured I'd take a free shuttle bus on the way back. The walk was pretty dull but at least it wasn't too long.
I didn't know what they had at the Tsudome. It turns out that they had kiddie rides, food vendors and entertainment inside the Tsudome and snow sculptures and slides next to it. The quality of the snow sculptures wasn't up to the level at Odori Park. The Tsudome venue seems to be intended for kids.
I didn't stay at the Tsudome very long. I planned on taking the free shuttle but at least the return trip isn't free so I walked back to the Metro station and caught a train to Susukino, the stop closest to my hotel and also right next to the Susukino Ice Festival. I took pictures of a lot of the ice sculptures again since I couldn't remember whether I had any daytime shots and then walked back to my hotel.
I headed out again in the evening for dinner. I didn't remember at the time but today was Chinese New Year's. I didn't see any sort of celebration that I thought was due that but it might have had something to do with why the restaurants were so crowded.
