I left Fairbanks, AK and flew back to Seattle, WA. After checking into my hotel and relaxing for a couple hours, I headed for Canlis for dinner. Canlis is on The Daily Meal's101 Best Restaurants in America list for 2012 and the owners and the restaurant have been featured on the Top Chef TV show.
I was seated at table one, the table where the founder of the restaurant, Peter Canlis, used to sit and make phone calls. His old rotary-dial phone was next to my table. I had a nice view out the picture windows that overlook Lake Union.
I had a hard time deciding what to order. I wound up ordering the Vegetarian Tasting Menu plus some Truffle Fries and a Canlis Salad, their signature dish. I also ordered a glass of Tokaji wine. In addition to what I ordered my server realized there were a couple other items I might like and I was given an order of sauted mushrooms and tea. And I did like them.
I had a great dinner. Even though it was a Saturday night the staff were free with their time. I met Brian Canlis, one of the co-owners. Another person gave me a tour of the kitchen and private dining rooms. I spoke to the sommelier about some of their wines and was given a couple free samples. At one point my server called me on the phone next to my table. It still works. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening. The only negative is that when I got to my hotel room I discovered that I no longer had the menu I had requested. I might have dropped it somewhere but I think the most likely answer is that someone picked it up when I left it sitting on a table near the entrance when I went to the bathroom before leaving.
