My friend Bill and I made the hour-and-a-half drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats for the second day of Speed Week. Our first stop was the starting line for course 2, one of the longer courses. We watched for a while and then headed over to the pits. We drove around in the pits and stopped and talked to some people.
Late in the afternoon a storm blew in out of nowhere. It got really windy and started to rain. People in the pits were running around putting things away. The storm quit very quickly but a lot of people seemed to be done for the day so we left the pits and drove over to the starting line. There were people waiting in line. We got out to check them out. After a while they decided the course was dry enough and the winds light enough to start running cars again.
We stayed until nearly 7:00. We then drove over to West Wendover to check the hotels. West Wendover is in Nevada and has casinos. West Wendover is adjacent to Wendover, which is in Utah and does not allow gambling. When I had checked hotel availability on Expedia the only hotels that showed up were the ones in Wendover and they were all full, which is why we wound up with a hotel in Salt Lake City. We'll be coming back in a couple weeks for World of Speed and hope to get a hotel.
I remembered that there was supposed to be a dinner at the KOA some evening. We stopped in at the KOA and there was a dinner being served. I'm not sure it was the one that I had seen advertised but it was the Bonneville crowd and we seemed to be welcome so we got in line and had dinner. After dinner we made the long drive back to our hotel.
