blogger visitor counter

I left my friend's house in Marietta and headed for Montgomery, AL to visit the state capitol.  I've been near Montgomery since I started visiting state capitols but I've never stopped in.  I had intended to stop once but wound up not having time and couldn't make it.  Then the next time I thought I had already been there so I didn't stop.  Oops.  Well, I made it this time.
The Alabama Capitol is a neo-classical, stone, symmetrical building with a central dome like many of the state capitols.  Also like many of them, this one has been added onto repeatedly.  And also like most of them, this one had repeated alterations made that messed up the building until they eventually performed a major renovation to bring the building back to its original grandeur.

In addition to being the Alabama Capitol, the building was the Confederate Capitol briefly in 1861 until the capital was moved to Richmond, Virginia.

After touring the capitol I went to the State House, a much newer building across the street where the House and Senate Chambers are located.  Their move out of the capitol in 1985 was supposed to be temporary while the renovations were being performed but they've never moved back.

Next, I went to the White House of the Confederacy, which is also across the street from the capitol.

I tried to go to the Museum of Alabama in the Alabama Department of Archives and History,  Unfortunately, they were closed for inventory so I said goodbye to Mobile and headed for Texas.
