My first stop today was the Ohio Capitol in Columbus.  It's a Greek Revival, symmetrical building with a central cylindrical tower.  The cylindrical tower looks rather odd.  Most of the original designs, and there were several, featured a dome on top of the cylinder but the finished building wound up without one.

The capitol originally contained all state government offices.  As the government grew the open spaces in the building were turned into offices.  In 1901 the Supreme Court was moved to another nearby building.  The original 54 rooms had increased to 317 by 1989 when a massive restoration project started.  As part of the restoration project, the Supreme Court moved again and their building became the Senate Building.  Restoration work was completed in 1993.

When walking up to the entrance you pass a large brass copy of the Great Seal of the State of Ohio imbedded in the concrete.  The seal is surrounded by a banner that says, "WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE".  I'm not sure when it was put in but it's in good condition so it was probably recently.  I don't think that would fly in most states.

The restored interior looks quite nice.  The rotunda with it's tiled floor is particularly nice.  I took a few pictures and then went on a tour.  After the tour I went back and finished taking pictures.

After leaving the capitol I drove to Charleston, WV and found a hotel for the night.
