I went to the Minnesota Institute of Arts today. The first pleasant surprise was that it is free although they suggest a $5 donation. After leaving $5 I headed into the galleries and found myself in the Asian section of the museum.
After looking over many very good displays of jade and ceramic pieces I took a look at the museum map. That's when I discovered just how large the museum is and realized I'd better hurry up. About that time a tour entered the gallery I was in. The docent was quite good so I joined the tour. The tour seemed to be intended to give you a broad overview of their collection and we wandered through many of the galleries.
At the end of the tour I found myself in the European section. Rather than go back to where I had joined the tour I finished looking at the gallery I was in and then started working my way back toward the modern and contemporary section.
After checking out the modern and contemporary sections I headed back downstairs and toward the gallery where I had joined the tour. The museum closed just before I reached it. There were dozens of galleries I never saw.
The museum may not have a lot of depth in all areas but it certainly has a lot of breadth (and I still haven't seen much of the museum) and many of the pieces are quite good. I'm certainly not an expert, but the jade pieces in the Asian section seemed exceptional to me and there were quite a number of pieces in the modern and contemporary section that I liked.
