Where I stayed
I re-arranged things in my car so I'd be able to drive it, said goodbye to some people in my theme camp and headed out of Burning Man. There was some traffic getting out but nothing compared to the traffic jam I faced upon arrival. It took a bit over an hour to reach Gerlach, the nearest town. I had my car washed in Gerlach to get rid of some of the dust since I understand that dusty cars attract the attention of the police in Nevada. I then headed south to I80.
My destination was a hotel room in Imlay, NV that I had reserved in January before starting this trip. Imlay is a couple hours east of the point where I got back onto I80. There aren't many towns heading east on I80. I knew I'd be tired and in need of a shower so I made the reservation to be sure I had a place to stay.
My GPS lead me to a spot near a truck stop. It isn't always 100% accurate so I wasn't concerned when I didn't see a hotel. I went to the truck stop and got dinner at the Taco Bell. I noticed that the address on my receipt was the address I had entered in my GPS for the hotel. When I was done eating I started looking around the truck stop. I saw some signs that said hotel and registration but couldn't find the hotel. I finally asked the cashier in the convenience store where I'd find it. She told me it had been torn down in February! I had confirmation numbers from both Expedia and the hotel neither of whom had bothered to let me know the hotel was gone. I've had some trouble with reservations before but never anything quite like this.
I headed east to Winnemucca, the next town. Fortunately, I was able to get a room there.
