Most of the promising spots near the campground were picked over by the group yesterday.  Since the weather was cooler today, causing the mushrooms to grow more slowly, any that appeared overnight were going to be very small.  I decided I'd give up on mushroom hunting and do something else. The campground is on the road to the Hetch Hetchy Valley area, a portion of Yosemite National Park that I haven't visited before, and a visit there seemed like a good alternative.

Like the nearby Yosemite Valley, the Hetch Hetchy Valley is surrounded by tall, steep granite cliffs and tall waterfalls. Unlike the Yosemite Valley, which was made a national park and protected from development, the Hetch Hetchy Valley was seen as a potential site for a water reservoir. The construction of a dam was approved in 1913 and eventually completed in 1938. In spite of the dam and reservoir the valley is still attractive and the waterfalls are still impressive.

There's only one road into Hetch Hetchy Valley.  It ends at a parking lot near the dam.  There's a trail from the parking lot that crosses the dam and then runs along the reservoir below several of the waterfalls that cascade down the cliffs surrounding the reservoir. My feet were sore and I didn't intend to hike far but I wound up hiking the  five miles round-trip to Wapama Falls, the second major waterfall on the trail.

After my hike I headed toward San Francisco and got a room near the airport.
