I got up early and headed for the lottery for permits for Coyote Butte North again. Again, there were over 90 people vying for the 10 permits. Again, I wasn't one of the lucky few.
I then headed up Cottonwood Canyon Road. My first stop was the Grosvenor Arch, It's a fairly impressive arch and is a relatively short walk from the parking area.
I then headed for Round Valley Draw. I turned off of Cottonwood Canyon Rd. and expected to find the trailhead a short distance down the side road. Unfortunately, there is no signage at the trailhead and I continued past for four miles on a bumpy dirt road. I eventually decided I must have missed it and turned back. I saw something that looked like it might be a trail register. I was finally in the right place.
I headed down the wash toward the start of a canyon. I didn't know what to expect but I was surprised by what I found. It turned out to be a very narrow slot canyon. I started working my way down into the canyon. I got to one section that required a little chimneying. It looked like I'd be able to get back up so I went down. Shortly after that there was a much larger drop that was going to require more chimneying than I could do with my backpack on. I didn't have a rope to lower the backpack so I gave up and headed back. I was able to get back up the first section that required chimneying and get out of the canyon.
Then I headed for The Cottonwood Narrows. I was afraid it might be another difficult slot canyon but it turned out to be a relatively wide canyon that can be easily walked in most places. I walked the length of the canyon, with is probably about 1 1/2 miles, and then turned around and returned through the canyon. It wasn't as interesting as Round Valley Draw would have been but it was certainly a lot easier.
Then I wandered around an area called Candyland. I've seen an interesting picture that is supposed to have been taken there but I couldn't find anything that looked like it. I eventually got tired, headed back to the car and headed for my hotel.
