The friends I was camping with and I packed up our camp and got ready to leave. My friends headed out and I went to say goodbye to the person who leads our theme camp, A Shack of Sit. The news had been circulating that rain was predicted for tomorrow starting at noon. The playa gets very sticky when it's wet and, as a result, the Burning Man organization was requesting that everyone leave before the rain starts and letting them know that they'd be stuck wherever they happened to be until the playa dried if they weren't out in time. Our leader needed some help getting our theme camp's structure taken down and I was recruited.
I worked for around three hours. Then I hopped in my car and headed out. The traffic had backed up substantially since my friends had left. They had gotten to the paved road in about an hour; it took me around six hours.
As I was sitting stuck in traffic I tried to find the radio station with the traffic reports. While I was searching I heard a small station from somewhere in Black Rock City that was playing the Mothers of Invention's Absolutely Free and Freak Out! in their entirety (Well, except for The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet. I wasn't too surprised that was skipped.) It made at least some of the time in traffic more interesting.
I was hoping to find a place to get my car washed on my way to the freeway but I didn't make it onto the paved road until after dark and they only seem to operate during the day. I stopped for a Vegetarian Indian Taco on my way to the Clown Motel in Tonopah, NV where I had a reservation, I was getting pretty tired. I had to stop every 10 or 15 miles and walk around a bit to wake up. I finally made it to my hotel at around 4:00am, 13 hours after I had left Burning Man. I was so tired I didn't even take a shower before going to sleep.
