My first stop was the Moraine Park Visitor Center. I took a look at their exhibits and then continued on. There were a couple places I wanted to stop but there wasn't any parking so I continued on. I drove to the Sprague Lake trailhead. The parking lot was full.but as I was leaving I saw a bunch of elk in the lake and a bunch of people parking illegally just beyond. I joined them and went to see the elk.
When I arrived the elk were browsing in the middle of the lake. They slowly walked toward shore and started browsing along the bank, which by that time was crowded with people. Among them were several very stupid people. One idiot was going up to one of the elk and trying to get it to eat some branches out of his hand. The elk would charge at him and he'd duck behind a tree. Then he'd come out and try feeding it again. This went on for several minutes before someone in the crowd threatened the idiot and he finally left.
Soon after that a couple was standing side by side with their two young kids in front of them in the direction the herd was heading. One of the elk felt crowded and charged them. The idiots just stood there. They didn't even move their kids out of the way. Soon after the elk charged again, getting much closer. The man took a swing at the elk and missed. They still didn't move their kids out of harm's way. People finally convinced them it might be a good idea to move.
Since I was parked illegally, I was concerned about getting a ticket. As I walked back toward my car there was a ranger by a car that was in an even worse spot than where I had parked. He seemed much more concerned about the illegally parked cars than by the idiots harassing the elk.
I continued south. Again, there were no parking spaces at a couple places were I wanted to stop. I continued on to the Bear Lake trailhead where I finally found a parking space. I hiked to Bear Lake and took a few pictures. I then hiked to Alberta Falls, which is much closer to one of the places I wanted to park but is only about a mile from Bear Lake.
As I feared, the lighting at Alberta Falls was very uneven since the sun was still fairly high. I took a few pictures and headed back to the car.
I headed toward Cheyenne, WY, my next stop. This took me through Estes Park where I stopped at Taco Bell and had my next encounter with an idiot. My bill was $2.03. I gave him a ten and checked for change. I gave him the three cents. He said, "I can't take that. I already put it in." I said, "Just give me three cents more than the $7.97 it says for change - $8." His response was, "That's really complicated." I said, "Well, if that's too complicated than I've already given you the three cents so just take the $2 I still own from $10. 10 minus 2 is 8." His response was, "I can't do that. I have to go get the manager." Who's dumber? The idiot who doesn't know that 10 minus 2 is 8 or the manager who has an idiot who can't do arithmetic working the register? I wonder what the idiot does when he buys things. He can't figure out what change to give them so I guess it just accumulates in his pocket. He must have a really big pile of change at home.
I ran into another idiot at another Taco Bell recently. Actually, another customer ran into him. A woman was backing out of a parking space in a full-sized pickup truck. Instead of parking in the second row of parking spaces and having to walk an extra car-length, he rushed up into the parking space she was going to back into. Predictably, she DID back into that parking space and the rear of her pickup scraped across his hood. I think it would have taken him a lot less time to walk the extra car length or to wait a few seconds until she was out of the space before he pulled up into it instead of dealing with all the hassles of getting his car repaired.
I wish that I only occasionally ran into idiots. Unfortunately, I could write an entire blog just about them. I'd never have a shortage of material.
