I headed south from Montrose, CO toward Durango on US Route 550.  A portion of the route I took is also known as the Million Dollar Highway.  Part of this route is the eastern half of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway.  This route took me through Ouray, a nice, little town with a lot of Victorian architecture set in a picturesque box canyon, and Silverton.  This highway goes up to around 11,000 feet.  The aspen trees in the higher areas were beginning to change colors.  It was a very scenic drive.

From Durango I headed to Alamosa.  Things were going fine until I got stopped about 40 minutes from Alamosa.  Fortunately, I got off with a warning.  Then when I got to Alamosa all of the hotels were full.  Since there aren't many other towns close to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve I decided to try the campground.  Lucky for me, they had room so I spent the night sleeping in the car.
