My six-day mountaineering class started today at the guide company's office in Talkeetna.  The last I heard there were going to be three students in the class but one of them has been recovering from an injury and didn't recover quickly enough to take the class so it will just be two students and one instructor.  After a brief introduction the instructor went over our equipment to be sure we had everything required.  We loaded our packs and duffel bags, filled our water bottles and tested our emergency beacons and were ready to go.

Even though it was a lovely day in Talkeetna, something I haven't seen often since I've been in Alaska, the conditions on the glacier we intended to fly to were quite different and the pilot told us we couldn't fly there yet.  While we were waiting for better news about our flight we went over some of the lessons in knots, ropes and crevasse rescue.  We were eventually told that we wouldn't be flying today.  We then got a lesson on the cooking equipment we'll be taking and cooked dinner at the office.  I then went and checked into a motel.

Actually, I'm a bit relieved.  My back hurts after sleeping in a tent for two weeks recently and I could use another night in a bed.  Maybe we'll be able to fly out tomorrow.
