I got there a bit late and the ranger had already left. I caught up with the group and walked with them for a while but their pace was too fast for me so I just dropped back and walked at a pace more comfortable for me. The ranger wasn't stopping very often to point out things so I didn't think I was missing much.
The hike is 7.4 miles round-trip with roughly 3,400 feet of elevation gain. The first two thirds were wet rocks and mud. Most of the last third was snow. Eight of the 18 people on the walk made it to the warming hut where the ranger stopped at the top. Seven of us walked the remaining quarter mile or so to a point overlooking the icefield while the ranger waited in the hut. The weather was so bad you couldn't see much of anything. We walked back to the warming hut and re-joined the ranger for the walk down. I stayed with the group all the way to the Visitor Center by the parking lot. It took us 7 1/2 hours round-trip.
I wouldn't recommend this walk on a day with poor visibility.
