I had reservations today for a Kayaking With the Whales trip with Alaska Mountain Guides.  In order to guarantee the trip I had to agree to pay for the entire boat, which was slightly more than twice the price of a single person.  If any other people signed up then we'd each pay the published rate.  Unfortunately, nobody else signed up.

I got a ride over to the Gustavus dock and met Matt, my guide.  We got on a boat that took us a few miles across Icy Straight to Point Adolphus on Chichagof Island where we were dropped off.  It was foggy and raining on the way there.  We hopped in a tandem kayak for my first try at sea kayaking.

The weather wasn't the best.  We stayed in protected areas so we didn't have to deal with as much wind and rough water but it continued to rain.  There were plenty of Humpback whales.  They didn't come particularly close but they did put on quite a show breaching dozens of times.  A pod of four or five Orca wandered by, which is an unusual sight this time of year, but they didn't come very close either.  We did get a close look at some River otters, Harbor seals and Bald eagles.

After four or five hours, the boat returned to pick us up.  I was pretty cold by then and was glad to see him.  We loaded up the kayak and headed back toward Gustavus with some detours to try and see some Humpback whales.  We was a few at closer range than we had in the morning.

After we got back to the dock I got a ride back to the hotel.  I warmed up a little and then got a ride over to Glacier Bay Lodge.  I went to the Visitor Center to see their exhibits and to watch their movie.  I also went to the Registration Desk to look into a return flight.  There are no flights on the 4th but they booked me on an early flight on the 5th, which should arrive early enough for me to make the Tracy Arm Fjord tour I have scheduled.  Fortunately, Annie Mae Lodge has room for me on the 4th.
