It turns out I was at the trail head for the redundantly named Trail of the Cedars Nature Trail, which is the trail I wanted to take. I hiked the Nature Trail and continued on to the Avalanche Creek Trail to Avalanche Lake, a round-trip hike of around five miles. I spent some time at Avalanche Lake taking pictures and then headed back.
When I got back to the car I was curious to see just how much of the Going-to-the-Sun Road was open so I headed east. It turns out there was quite a bit open today that I couldn't get to yesterday. I eventually got to a barrier just a couple miles short of Logan Pass.
I turned around and headed back west eventually reaching Lake McDonald. I had intended to come back to some of the spots I had visited earlier to get pictures around 6:00 when I thought the lighting would be best and the lake calmer but with the hike taking longer than expected and the time I took checking out the newly opened road it was around 9:00 by the time I made it back. I set my GPS for Mt. Rainier and headed there.
I started looking for a place to sleep but my GPS lead me through the middle of nowhere. I eventually got on I-90. I got off in Kellogg, Idaho to check the motels. In spite of the not so warm welcome of being stopped by a cop almost immediately (I didn't get a ticket), I got a room in Kellogg for the night. It was around 2:00am Montana time but luckily I got an extra hour when I entered Idaho since they're on Pacific Time. Tomorrow I'm going to finish the drive to Mt. Rainier National Park.
