The North Unit is a mix of grasslands and badlands. It resembles Badlands National Park geographically. The mix of wildlife is somewhat different. As in Badlands, the bison had to be re-introduced. Unlike Badlands, there are feral horses here. They also have introduced Longhorn Steers here. I'm not sure why they've introduced only steers but I've never heard of a feral cow so maybe they can't make it on their own.
I expected some displays about Roosevelt but there weren't any. Maybe they'll have something at the South Unit. This park isn't particularly busy although I suspect many more people go to the South Unit. I hiked around six miles today and I never met another person on the trail. The badlands, both here and in Badlands National Park, are fun to photograph but the weather wasn't cooperating with me today so I'm not sure I got anything particularly good. It was heavily overcast all day. I left about 45 minutes before sunset. Naturally, when I got about 10 minutes from the park the sun came out and the lighting on the grasslands and fields along the road look great. I like to think that it was still cloudy in the park; I didn't go back to check.
I'm going to the South Unit tomorrow and then heading toward Grand Teton National Park, which I'll visit Tuesday and Wednesday.
