Today would have been the day we got to see and stay at the Grand Canyon but our diversionary set back as a result of radiator repairs to Mac took us north instead. With a hire car sorted (didn't plan for one of those) we left Texas mid-afternoon and crossed through Oklahoma and Kansas to end in Nebraska - another 3 states under London’s belt on day 3.
The roads were narrow, fields enormous and much of mid-west America barren with hardly any Starbucks for a Frappuccino (gone are the places where you find a Starbucks on every corner!!) but you will find a Dollar General store in every small town and a lot of intensive beef production. Not the picture of American farming (big herds of happy cows in fields with men in boots and spurs and cowboy hats sat on horses corralling them) that I had imagined
But with 4 days to kill before Mac is out of the RV hospital thought we could make ‘mighty fine’ use of our time and get a part of the future road trip completed early. So, some hasty phone calls were made to friends and families to check if any beds were going to be available. Luck and great friends were in plenty!
First stop McCook, Nebraska (430 miles) – and accommodation provided by Russ (big thanks!) and overdue catch up with Jarrod and got to meet his new family Kim and Isaac (briefly late last night over a couple of beers but a bit longer this morning over breakfast in McCook).
On leaving them we began our journey to our next stop Denver, CO. Distance 258 miles.
