Venice is great. Beautiful and super laid back, it was a nice break after Rome. The city proper reminded us a lot of a Moroccan Kasbah - narrow winding streets with houses packed tightly together, interspersed with all sorts of shops. The main difference being a complete lack of stray cats, no sewage on the streets and significantly less beggars and street urchins. A nice, clean, Westernised, rich Kasbah. With water. Alright so the differences outnumber the similarities, but this is a crappy travel blog, who cares...
The city certainly lacks the grandeur of Rome, but is beautiful nevertheless. The canals really are a sight to behold. As far as pure romance goes, give me the top of a Saharan sand dune at sunset any day, but Venice is a strong contender too. We didn't get to do the stereotypical gondola ride with the guy in the stripy shirt and straw hat because it was freaking €80 for a half hour
The city is a veritable maze, very easy to get lost. We basically just referenced our map here and there, then set off in a general direction. There are something like 18 churches in just a few square kms, making for some good landmarks. All the canals cutting through town make it that much more of a hassle, as there aren't too many bridges. All in all though, its fun to just wander and get lost - more of an authentic experience that way.
Our two full days in Venice were plenty, so we decided to try to make a change, and head out to Greece. We can take a ferry from Venice for not too much money, and are quite excited to see the ruins in Athens (thanks to Mom and Dad for that one). We'll connect back through Italy to see Florence, but a break was needed - we found the Italians a little...intense for us.
Stay tuned for more...

! I figured maybe €20 tops, but for $115 CDN, I'll use my bloody imagination. We did, however, enjoy a free trip on a casino ferry, but snuck out quickly so we didn't have to gamble. what can I say??

Re: what can I say??
Hey Ang!
Intense is certainly the best way to describe Italians. They are very passionate people in everything they do - eating, drinking, socializing and even fighting on the bus! :)
You're not too intense for me. You are positively laid back compared the ones in Italy I have met. I will keep you around for sure. You're my girl.
Peace and love from Europe.
