Susa - hiking at the foot of the Alps!
From Lisa:
We left Venice, heading back across Italy. Our destination of Spain for the Il Tomatina festival in 2 weeks was looming in from of us. This was a little town we picked from the map, because it was still in Italy and it was situated at the foot of the Alps...hoping for some nice scenery. It was the FIRST time we had traveled without booking our next place to stay first...a true "seat of the pants" adventure. And we could not have been happier...the Information station in this town (the 2006 Winter Olympics were held here in Turino) sent us to a little B & B they recommended. They even called and made our reservations for us!
It was a fantastic place
This was a magical place -- mountains so high you could barely see the tops. We stayed an extra day, but it was hard leaving Susa.
From Cheryl:
Okay, anyone of you who knew me in my past life (well 4 months ago) knows that flying by the seat of my pants is not my idea of fun. I am (was!) the consummate planner after all.. Coming across Susa was all the proof I ever need to learn that it is not always necessary to plan out every minute detail!
It truly felt like a paradise here.. From Novella (which is Italian for cloud, because when she was a puppy she looked like a little fuzzy cloud) greeting us daily and letting us dote on her, to the amazing cross that lit up the mountain side at night in 20 minute intervals, the place was magic...
One other interesting experience here was dinner one night
It was hard to leave this place. Very peaceful and quaint... Definitely a time to reflect on everything going on around and within you..

Saying goodbye to Novella
. There was hiking, waterfall "cascade" discovery, and even a family of white-tailed foxes whose den we discovered in the mountains. I think our favorite thing, though was Novella (cloud) -- the German Shepard/Husky mix dog that befriended us for our stay. She even slept outside of the door of our room and was more than happy to have her tummy scratched when we got up in the morning. This was a magical place -- mountains so high you could barely see the tops. Lisa's best side!
. This was a very small town and there were not a huge number of dining options. We found a hotel that had a restaurant, but when we sat down we realized that there was no menu. For dinner you got the antipasti, a Primi (first course) and a Secondari (Second course). There were 5 rounds of antipasti.. I think I only recognized one, BUT I promised to try new and exciting things.. hmm.. Everything that was brought out to our plates for all three courses was AMAZING! I am not sure what most of it was, and I am not sure I want to know.. I know I liked it and that was all that mattered. It was hard to leave this place. Very peaceful and quaint... Definitely a time to reflect on everything going on around and within you..
