ROME

From Lisa:

Roma, Italy!

On the cruise it cost about 65 cents a MINUTE to use the Internet -- and it was excruciating slow! So on the island of Patmos we ducked into an Internet cafe and made the reservations for our next hostel stay in Rome. So many hostels in Rome had age restrictions -- no one OVER 35 allowed -- so that let me out. :-) We picked one that was advertised as near the beach - about 25 minutes from the center of Roma. It was awesome! Right across the street from a beautiful beach, lots of fun places to eat and drink -- pizza, beer, and tiny cups of expresso on the beach -- this is Italy after all Rome beach sunset

But our purpose there was to explore Roma. So we took off early every morning and found the train into the city -- super easy to do -- Rome has a great mass transit system. Did all of the "touristy" things, took lots of pictures and decided Rome was a nice enough place -- so much incredible history -- but in August it's very, very hot and crowded. NOT the best time for a visit. It's bigger than I thought, so we did lots of walking, stepping through ruins and streets I remember reading about in history books. We decided three days weren't enough, so stayed another day. And we found a Hard Rock Cafe, so I got the first buffalo chicken wings I've had in 6 weeks! Felt like being home! YUM!!!!

From Rome, we head north to Florence and the town of Vinci -- the Tuscany region of Italy. Time to do some research on Leonardo Da Vinci and some ideas we have for a book about his life. Have to do some work on this trip -- it can't all be fun! :-))

From Cheryl:

First off - YES it CAN all be fun!  Even the work part Beach volleyball!

!

Rome has so much to see and do..  As Lisa mentions, we booked another day just to TRY to see more.  You could stay here for a week and still wish you saw that one place you just missed.

One thing that was nice, was taking a whole day to not be a tourist and just chill out on the beach.  On this day we actually got to spend time with some new friends we met who were sharing our room.  Paulien from the Netherlands, and Anja from Berlin.  They were both on a holiday (the European word for VACATION!) for a bit.  We hope to see Paulien while in Florence and when we head to Germany, we will call Anja too!  It is really nice to meet people from all over.  It is one of the things I wanted when staying at hostels, and I am not the least bit disappointed in that.

Hard Rock..  ahhh..  It has been 6 weeks with no fast food (actually do not miss that at all!) but also no food that we are use to.  Don't get me wrong, we have had some amazing food, BUT it was time for chicken wings and potato skins!  We took advantage of Hard Rock when we found it!  There is a little bit of home sickness coming on and that helped!
