Civitavecchia, Italy

Just a few kilometers from Rome, we found the port (after only getting lost a FEW times) and the Costa Victoria ship that was to take us through the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean to visit Sicily, Patmos, Mykonos, Izmir, and Santorini. This one cruise was definitely unique -- I think we were the ONLY passengers on board who came with a backpack instead of normal luggage!! Typically, I way overpack -- just in case -- but this time it was just the basics. And for formal night? Well, let's just say my dusty Keen shoes hid well under the table. Thank goodness I'd packed that "wrinkle-free" skirt deep down in my pack!

We managed okay though and met some wonderful people on board. Typically the dinners are a 'hit or miss' when you are assigned to a group on arrival, but this trip we lucked out! It was fun every night to hear about the adventures of the honeymooners, Sue and Paul; to find out about donkeys from Jewelretta and her daughter Loretta; and to learn of all the "secrets" of places on the ship and in Rome from Carolee and Brent! The food was marginal, but the company was wonderful! Best wishes to Sue and Paul in their new marriage, Safest of travels and making a new home in Nigeria to Carolee and Brent (and hope you find the perfect room for those horse lamps!), and congratulations to Jewelretta on the successful planning of this trip and showing Loretta a fantastic European vacation before she goes back to school!

First stop...Catania, Sicily!

good luck and safe journey!
Hey, I finally made it to your blog. What fun to see some more pictures and I'll read more about your travels and follow along. I'll send you a link when I finally get my cruise pictures organized into a web album. It was such a pleasure to meet you and hear of your exciting journey. We enjoyed the dinner times as well. The horse lamps are beside the guest bed -- if you make it to Lagos, you can use them to light up your bedtime reading.
