Lyon, France
Sunday, July 22
Having a rental car has really opened up the countryside! We're able to drive through some of the most beautiful countryside - sunflower fields as far as you can see - and today we came through the mountains on the way to Lyon.
The roads through the mountains are very beautiful, but they are also very steep. Some of you may have heard about the tragic bus accident of the Polish pilgrims near the town of Grenoble on Sunday morning. That is the next town over from where we are staying tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with the survivors and the families of those who were lost.
I'm learning a lot about French cities and towns here. Lyon is the second largest city in France, but it seems so much more open and accessible than some of the others. It's a city surrounded by the Rhone River and the Soane. We're just here a short while, on the way to Marseilles, St. Tropez, Cannes, and Nice by Thursday, but it's definitely a place I'd like to come back to see more of...
We're on a bit of a tight schedule to get to Nice because Cheryl did her research - imagine that?? - and found that by "buying" a new car from a Peugeot dealer (in Nice) and then selling it back to them at the end of the trip in October (in Paris) - called the "open-road" program they have for Europe, that it's MUCH less expensive than having a rental car, a train pass, or any combination of those. Full insurance is included, too. So it's not a bad deal at all. The hardest part has been getting the paperwork back and forth while we're traveling from place to place. It's tough not having a physical address sometimes! :-)
Onward to Marseilles...

Love the pictures!!!
The sunflowers picture looks great! I am glad you all are enjoying the countryside. That deal with buying the car in Europe sounds great.
Miss you all and keep safe! BTW...I saw you are so close to Italy! I am GREEN with envy!
Keep the photos coming!
GREAT PICS. - HOPE ALL IS OKAY!
Cheryl, we were sad to hear (in one comment) that you & Lisa were 'victims of a pickpocketer' - HOW RUDE! I say DUCT TAPE your valuables to your bodies!! Glad you're not letting it spoil your trip. Really nice photos of France...and I too, like that 'tip' on buying a car & selling it back! How's the WEATHER? You have long sleeves & pants on! Back in Tampa, the daily lightening, thunder & rain is quite an event. And it is HOT HOT HOT! So stay 'cool' and safe. Take care. Love, Nancy & Angelo @ FishHawk Storage
