Fraser Island Aust.

Mar. 17th and it's time to get caught up. I'm really into holiday mode now so it's not like we''ve been too busy it's just that I'm getting lazier. But we've been busy too. We're already into our third day in Bali. But first things first. Here's what we've been up to. After Tweed's Head we pushed north again past Brisbane to Hervey (pronounced Harvey, why I don't know) Bay. Bali isn't Bali either to the Aussie's it's Baaaly, they didn't even understand where we were going when we said Bali. At the Info Centre (use them they're full of help we even got a free CD with the Sounds of Hervey Bay) we selected an apartment suite, The Charlton, across the road from the park on the beach, all services where we could prepare our own food. Cheryl figures that in SE Asia we' be eating out all the time so we might as well cook what we're familiar with. Lots of walks along the beach, picked up and mailed some souvenirs, and relaxed by the pool reading. The big thing though was a ferry trip over to Fraser Island. An all-day tour on "the biggest sand island in the world" at 185 km top to bottom and an average of 30 km wide. The only way to get around was on 4 wheel drive buses or jeeps. Pretty interesting flora ( a sub-tropical rain forest), big trees, and birds but we didn't come across any dingoes (wild dogs) although we saw some tracks along the road. A wade in a creek and a swim in the pond (fresh water lake to the Aussie's who would likely call White Lake in Renfrew an ocean at that rate. Peter the guide made the trip more interesting than I can here. March 14th was travel day. Off to Brisbane airport for a flight to Sydney (going the wrong direction) to then fly back north and west to Bali. Having our first flight cancelled worked out better for us as we were upgraded to an earlier Quantus flight and then had enough time in Sydney to change teminals and catch the Jetstar flight to Denpensar (Bali). I'll break off here, let the laptop cool and tell you about Bali. (Just to kep you interested and waiting with baited breathe it's the part of the trip that I was most looking forward to and so far it hasn't disappointed.
