Our best day/night here was spent at the horses...After the girls were asked to model in a fashion show there (they must have been short on girls that day in Broome!!) we thought it was on fair if we went along to support/jeer them! The races were a great laugh and the betting system was one out of the mickey mouse school of gambling. For some reason you could barter with you odds on the horse you fancied, the best one we got was a 5-1 horse down to 12-1 which came in, giving a nice tidy profit - we thought we better quit while we were ahead then sensing some kind of scandal in the pipeline
After the horses had finished everyone gathered to a oval shape arena to partake in the best, most alcohol fuelled, loud and craziest game of all time - 2up.......It went without saying that we loved it!
It's difficult to explain exactly the extent of madness this game actually involves but ill give it a go to my best ability - It is basically a game of heads or tails but with 2 coins. It starts as i mentioned with everyone standing around a concrete oval in the ground around 15ft by 10ft. After this someone is picked from the crowd to enter the arena (he is know as the tosser!) in order to throw the 2 coins in the air. Just before he does so, everyone else bets on whether they think its going to be 2heads or 2tails, they do this by holding there money up in the air and shouting the amount of money followed by "on the heads". E.g "50 on the heads". Some one else from the crowd then excepts the offer by betting 50 on tails. The tail better than holds both sets of money while the throw takes place, he keeps it if the tails win or gives both sets of money to the head better if heads comes up. The game just works and people hand over their money to each other with no menace or arguments! As the throw is taking place all who have bet either shout "head um up" or "tail um up" at the top of their voices, it was quite a surreal game and one i seriously doubt could ever be repeated anywhere else but oz!
