The bus Journey from Hue-Da Nang was only 3 hours but has been the only journey I have genuinely feared for my life on! The bus driver was a mad man, over taking on blind corners up steep hills, down steep hills, next to no-overtaking signs- We must have missed on coming traffic by inches a dozen times, they just have no concept for safety! At one point in the journey, during a section of duel carriage way our lane was blocked due to a lorry riding over a scooter. Our driver therefore decided to take it upon himself to drive down the wrong side of the duel-carriage for a good 1/2 km beebing his horn as load and for as long as possible expecting on coming traffic to move out his way! Some VERY close calls on that journey.
Da Nang wasn't on our bus route but we decided to stop and take a look as we were highly recommended "China Beach" that lies just 2 km from it. After getting off the bus in Da Nang we decided to walk the "2 km's" to China Beach. As we wondered down the streets and roads it was clear that they do not get many western visitors here! Everyone was literally staring at us as we traipsed down the road with our backpacks on, they just didn't know what to think, they really couldn't believe their eyes! One poor kid on a bike was staring at us so much in amazement he drove straight past us, kept staring and ran straight in to a road side market stall! We tried to worn him but obviously with him not speaking English there was only so much we could do! As a sign of respect we at least waited till he had drove off very red faced and embarrassed before we cracked up laughing!
When we EVENTUALLY made it to the beach, we found a nice hotel to stay at right on the beach, it was a nice relaxing day or so but we didn't see anything too special with the highly acclaimed "China Beach". (Sorry Girls!) Maybe we missed something!? It was great to be in the bare minority though and was nice to be treated like royalty by the locals for a couple of days! More thumbnails ...
