Now we are all back safely home I thought I would write a little summary of the trip for any one else attempting something similar.
Things we did right
Strangely for me we did a fair amount of planning and that seemed worthwhile. We had all done a days "Harley Experience" ride in Wales where we got to ride every current Harley Bike so we'd all chosen something we thought we'd be comfortable with which proved to be true. We had planned the route and all the stops. Highway one was fantastic and our diversion inland to Palmdale was a great change of scenery and climate. There was 2 schools of thought on booking hotels ahead but I'm glad we did the downside was having to make it to a fixed location each day the upside was we didn't have to search around for accommodation when we got there just unload and relax. For us 280 miles a day was enough we should have planned a shorter 1st day as picking up the 4 bikes certainly took some time. We found the cheap motels more than adequate for our biking needs. The bikes all had panniers but they were fixed so packing and unpacking everyday was a pain and in the end we just strapped our own bags on the back of the bike
Things we could have done better
Some of the things we learnt may just have been due to our relative lack of experience with long bike tours travelling in a group of 4
Better bike comms would have been a bonus we all had some cheap and nasty Aldi comms which were ineffective and cumbersome that we ditched at the end of day 1. We did all at least have our own mobiles which I would say are essential. May be a second satnav would have been useful. Probably everyone should have had there own copy of the route for when things did go wrong  The 2 punctures we suffered were tedious I would definitely carry at least a couple of cans of spray puncture fix gunk next time (for tubed and tubeless tyres). Have some light weight riding gear if your not prepared to ride in a t-shirt, it did get incredibly hot and we still needed neck warmers and long sleeved undershirts for a couple of the early morning starts,

I did fear with a trip planned so far in advance there was the potential for it not to live up to expectations but that didn't happen it was a truly memorable holiday that was well worth all the time and effort and almost all the money spent on it. Eastcoast 2011 anyone ?
