Macau - an excursion and another stamp in our passports

During our stay in  Hong Kong we decided to make a day trip to the former portuguese colony (and now chinese special administrative zone) Macau. Of course we chose a Chinese public holiday so the ferry and town were packed. That had it's good side, too, though. Macau has myriad bakeries. Their specialties are almond cakes, crepes with seaweed and meat and sticky peanut delicacies. All bakeries were preparing their specialties in front of us and dishing out free samples. We certainly had our fill! Mmmmh!

Modern Macau has two sides. On one hand there's the rich Portuguese heritage of colonial buidings and churches. On the other hand it's being fast turned into a casino haven to rival the grandeur of Las Vegas.

We went on a long walk to take in the old treasures, among them the beautiful ruins of St Paul's cathedral, the old town hall a hill fort and visitied a maoist temple dedicated to Ma, the goddess of sailors and namesake of the colony. We also lit a candle for our families and friends at one of the churches and focused on our memories of home. We were astonished how long it took us to include everyone into our thoughts and prayers. We sure miss you all!!

We then went to a grand casino called the "Venetian". This gigantic joint venture by Vegas entrepreneurs is themed on Venice. It's incredibly large. You can ride several canals with gondolas and  feast on St Marco's square. And of course gamble. It was fun watching the dynamics at some of the gaming tables.

Macau is definitely worth the trip!!!
