We continued our  travel down the remainder of the Oregon coast and into northern California. It was a very scenic drive along the coast on Route 101, the Pacific coast scenic byway.  This route travels in and out of Tsunami hazard areas that are very well marked along the way!

This post will include pictures of the scenic coastal drive as well as the pictures from Redwood National Park.

We really enjoyed our stay at Redwood National Park. Everybody needs to see these trees! Dave and I just can't get over just how big they can grow!

We camped at the Jediah Smith Campground situated on the edge of the Smith river. This campground is nestled in an old growth Redwood forest so the trees are huge. Nice, spacious campsites with huge fire ring, bear box and picnic table. I took a picture of the campsite so you can see for yourself!

Having the little Jetta to run around the park, we were able to take some neat little dirt roads that brought us well into the old growth redwood groves. The car also allowed us to take a dirt road that led us into the golden coast beach area and the trailheads for the hike that we chose.

We spent yesterday hiking first up through the Fern Creek Canyon area and continued onto a mountain ridge trail that brought us up the mountains and traveled along the ridge at the top for quite a few miles. It then zig zagged down the side of the mountain, switch-backs all the way, and brought us to the Coastal trail which meandered along meadow-like area along the base of the mountains. Really neat walk with a varied landscape. We only saw 3 other people on these trails the entire day. Had the trails all to ourselves!

We were wondering if most people just drive through the park because they certainly weren't on the trails!

Hope you enjoy the pics!
