Arose today with plans to head up to Tignish to start cycling the Confederation Trail. But as our GPS lady would say….RECALCULATING!! In planning, we discovered that accommodation along the trail is difficult to find, especially on the west end of the island and especially this late in the season, After much debate we decided in the end to stay at our current B&B here in Charlottetown until Friday and do day trips out from here - the island is only147 km. wide and at it’s narrowest, about ____km wide . It is becoming more and more obvious that, as they always say, you’re never very far from anything else, no matter where you are on the Island. However, Parnell, our B&B host, did say that there are islanders living on the east side who have never been to the west and vice versa.

The trailhead was quite close to our B&B, so we left our truck at ‘home’ and cycled directly to the trail - destination today, a small town named Mt. Stewart. The trail meandered through fields and in and out of small towns. The maples are turning red now and the ferns are starting to show their fall colors. The air was fresh and the sun shone down on us - a day of perfect cycling!! 27 km later, we arrived at our destination and stopped at a local restaurant for lunch. Here we met a couple around our age from Missouri also on bicycles. They had left their vehicle at the US border and had cycled into Canada. It appeared that they were cycling with no particular destination or time frame in mind. They were mostly tenting along the way and shared their wisdom on camping successfully when temperatures start to drop. Not that we are liable to take up tenting again on this trip, our equipment is just not adequate to keep these old bones comfortable enough to give up the warm dry beds of B&Bs!

We decided to alter our route home, riding more on the highway but into strong head winds

By the end of the day, we calculated that we had ridden approximately 80 km. We were tired and our ’bottoms’ were a bit sore, but it does feel good to be more active again.

Not up to getting cleaned up to go out for an evening meal so just picked up a bit of food at a grocery store and had a simple meal at our B&B tonight.
