The drive from the Interstate to the actual tower took about an hour and was very picturesque - the terrain being rolling and most of it farmed in hay or oats
Here we were, looking up at this solid piece of stone that is over 800 feet straight up and constructed of smooth, multi-faceted vertical columns all tightly fitted together. It truly took my breath away. All around the base is an apron of smashed columns that have fallen from the tower over the millenia. Further from the tower scattered through out the pines are bigger chunks of granite that still retain there shape. Maybe it was just us guessing but we could visualize, by comparing the shapes we stood beside, were they used be attached to the tower. Although is was hot we did the 1.3 mile walk around the base on a smooth path that skirted the edge of the boulder field. . We were glad to get back to a cold drink and the comfort of the van but we chattered a long time about how cool this place is. So far this has been the highlight of our trip on the cool things to see scale. Here is a link the the park's website:
The trip from the tower to Buffalo was pretty enough but uneventful. We got settled in nicely to a chicken supper done on the BBQ. Wendi caught up on some correspondence and then it was lights out for a good night's sleep after our strenuous and exciting day.
