Having read lonel planet, combined with our experiences of tuk-tuk drivers in Siem Reap we decided to cycle Angkor Wat. Easier said than done is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this painful experience. We woke early and desended for breakfast - which was good. We then went outside to rent our cycles. 1 dollar each and big smiles all around as we had saved money. Bob's bike was green and clean, Weeble decided to go for a bike that had gears - only problem was that the gears didn't work and Weeble had to cycle around in the hardest cog. Cycling to Angkor was no problem. We stopped off and got a 3 day entry which was $40 and proceeded onto Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is mind boggling but unfortunately for us and the 1000's of other visitors had a lot of re-construction work being done to it. We did however walk around the site and took various pics of the temple and artwork inside.
We then moved onto Banteay Kdei, before the famous Ta Prohm temple. This temple has gain a following with the tourists for it's spectacular photo oppotunities of butresses engulfing the temples. It was a tourist fenzy to get the best postion and photos. A group of Japanese people came and automatically began taking photos as everyone had to wait until they had finished. Lap Dog and Poodle (a German couple affectionately named by us) continued to hog all the best photo shoots as they stood around for ages while their daughter took 10 pics and then used a camcorder to record the event as well.
We then moved onto Ta Som, which has another fantastic picture moment at the end of the temple complex before climbing both East Mebon and Pre Rup.
We returned the bikes and gingerly staggered back to the hotel. It was a kodak moment as we both moved like John Wayne. Bums and backs sore it was a hectic first day.
