Because I've been so busy with regular work and family life, I've brought out my suitcase ahead of time and starting laying things into it now. I'm pretty certain that I might forget something - but it really doesn't matter when it comes to personal items. My theory is if you're traveling anywhere within the United States - chances are pretty good you're within driving distance of a Walmart, Kmart, Meijer, Target or some other mass merchandiser!
What I can't forget are items that I need for photography. Specialty items such as batteries, flash cards, cables and filters can't be as easily located if you should forget them. Or - if you are fortunately enough to find a camera store - chances are you might pay a premium price for that missing item.
I had a box arrive from Amazon.com yesterday afternoon - I now have a headlamp (for those moments I might stay out late for a great sunset) a clamp that can hold a flash off-shoe by attaching it onto a tripod leg or other location (I may try this for some macro photography), and an extra 2 gig Compact Flash card. I don't want to be out someplace, filling up my cards and discover I'm unable to offload the cards conveniently.
My slingpack has a weatherproof protective covering, and a Canon cable release with a timer should be arriving any day now. I've serviced my tripod and have a nice new Bogen tripod head as well. I did get one that is heavier than perhaps someone hiking would want - but I need to be able to support a huge Sigma 50-500mm zoom lens that weighs over 5 lbs. itself.
Oh - and at least 3 batteries, right? If the batteries go dead, then you're done for the day (or at least until you're able to charge one back up!).
Any other photographers reading this right now - drop me a note and let me know what other items you can't live without in the great outdoors!
