Parades.
Parades are fun. Especially the ones that people from anywhere else would not care about. When we're on the road over the 4th of July we really try to make it to a parade. Our first was in Cody, WY with our friends Jim & Raisin. That was a nice one, and there was also an amateur rodeo thrown in to boot. I think the next two were in Bloomington, IN when we were visiting our youngest daughter. Then we saw one in Sterling City, NM with our friends Jim, Raisin, Ron & Judie. Now we can add the one in Cayucos, CA to the list.
The parade in Bloomington was, by far, the weirdest one of all. It was silent. No bands, no kazoos, no tap dancers, nada. There were horses, cars, floats, and more horses. But, best of all were the giant pieces of John Deere farm machinery all washed an polished. I'm not talking tractor. No. These were the big green things that do everything from reaping to sowing. All washed and waxed. These babies put on a performance; they would crab walk from one side of the street to the other, and then they would tilt one way and then the other. Then along came the best of all. A washed and waxed waste disposal truck. It was too clean to be just a garbage truck. The driver did a wonderful job pushing all of the levers so the crowds could see how it moved the waste from one end of the truck to the other. That was a parade to remember.
The one in Cody is a dim memory, but I know it had a lot of horses with a lot of cowboys. More than the parade, I remember this as the time we met our soon to be dear friends Jim & Raisin.
The parade in Sterling City was fun. Jim, Raisin, Ron, Judy and Pat & I all went to the town center with our chairs and sat and waited for the parade to start. Horses, cowboys, veterans, floats, flags, and this one had one band - I think. It was also hot as everything, but it was fun.
The parade in Cayucos was really good. It had everything you could want in a parade. Fire trucks, classic cars, a band, a kazoo band, tap dancers, a color guard of retired marines, baton twirling youngsters, kids on bicycles, and whole families just being silly. Sadly though, they did not have one horse or farm implement in it. But it sure did have a lot of spirit. It was a verry nice parade, and it really had a lot of people alongside the streets drinking at a real early time of day.
Parades are fun. Next year as we meander through the eastern States we will find another town that has a parade on the 4th of July so we'll be able to add it to the list.
