We graciously accepted the invitation (at a cost of $59) to visit George & Martha's place (more formally known as Mount Vernon) on Wednesday afternoon.  The drive there was slow - we took the odd wrong turn with Mrs G giving what I considered to be ambiguous directions!!  We only arrived at 3pm and they start closing at 4:00pm...

What a surprise - after the absolutely huge monuments to George Washington throughout the city, we expected his estate mansion to be quite spectacular -  the brief glimpses you see of it in movies like Pelican Brief and National Treasure II also support this.  In reality his house (they call it a mansion) was quite simple.  Beautiful views of the 10 miles of Potomac river frontage, but a very simple home.  

On the way home, we drove along the Mount Vernon parkway, a much more direct route along the Potomac river.  The houses along there are unassumingly large and full of character.  A walking/cycling trail all along with quaint bridges follow the river - I could live here....
