“We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Went across bridge into Washington to get our stamp (Master Traveler Designation) from Washington state and happened to be there when the Coast Guard was doing a mock rescue operation. We ran into the local CBS affiliate film crew working the story. I asked the lady reporter in my most charming and debonair way if they were there doing a story about our motorcycle ride across the country.  Apparently I'm not as funny on the west coast...

After the lady reporter finished ignoring me we went back across the bridge into Oregon to travel south on 101.   Beautiful scenes but a little slower travel than we had hoped.  Some of you may have been on A1A before.   Much the same

Don King, a Florida Gator that managed to make his way to Beaver country, took us in for the evening and fed and entertained us.  He told me that his daughter is a sophomore at Oregon State (the Beavers) but she may be transferring to The University of Oregon (the Ducks).  Don informs me that this will make her a Platypus.

Don has a beautiful home and he and his family could not have been any nicer.  We had surf and turf and many different types of snacks all evening.  It was the first real food that we have had since we left Florida.  Oh and by the way,  I think I may own stock in Dairy Queen now.

Many thanks to Don's lovely wife, Laura for sitting and entertaining Gary while the two drunken-idiot guitar players banged out whatever song fragments they could remember.  It was a late night.  Special thanks, too, to Don's neighbors who did not call the police.

Don has taken time off to ride along with us a couple of days and today, while at a photo stop, he told me a story.  A few months ago he received a call about a very good friend, Dale, that had been killed in an motorcycle accident earlier that day. He was very distraught with the news, obviously.  A few hours later I contacted him (22 years since I had last talked to him) to advise him that I would be traveling across country on a motorcycle soon and hoped we could get together.  He said he doesn't know that Dale helped me make the phone call but likes to think so.  After hanging up he thought to himself  " I get it, Dale... go on living"

I'm proud to say that Don King is not only alive and well but he's the same old Urchin that he used to be..  Honestly, as contrary as it sounds, I don't know that I can give anyone more of a compliment than that.
