June 30: After two hours on the overnight train they checked passports and told us our car didn't go to Hamburg, so we moved to the next car. Then they checked tickets, and we were in a First Class instead of Second, so we moved again – about three hours' sleep.

Another train to East Berlin. Sat on the floor between two cars. Took about a half-hour to get through the Russian Sector. Very interesting museum on the Western side. At the Russian War Memorial we watched the changing of the guard, all goose-stepping – really, really impressive.

Ate in the Ratskeller, had Hungarian goulash, steak with a fried egg on it, beer. Walked around looking at all the monuments, old charred buildings, ruins, Victory Column seen from a distance, guard station outpost at the wall. We were lost a bit too.

Berlin Zoo, largest in the world, I think, nice for a zoo. The grizzlies were funny. Wilhelm’s Kirche.

July 2: Bought two litres of orange juice, and Jan slipped and dropped it on the railroad tracks.

Later note:
When I met Jan in 2014 in Wellington, New Zealand, she reminded me that when in East Berlin, we deliberately tried to see how close we could get to the Wall before getting caught by the soldiers. Obviously, we were rather adventurous back then!
