Where I stayed
Had a late wake up call today at 7.15am and breakfast at 8. Beautiful weather outside and now we had 3 hours to ourselves to further explore San Marino. We immediately went for a walk up to the 2nd tower of the city walls defence system. It was a very steep walk but my feet are holding up better than the insides at the moment. Must have been something i ate as i have become very interested in toilets at the moment. I now have no hesitation in paying 30 - 50 euros for a nice clean toilet these days and many others are the same.
Still we made the Tower and 3 euros each later we were exploring it and the museum within it. The views were magnificent and many photos were taken. I know i haven't done them justice and the many photographers out there would love to be here. The museum was of special interest to me as they had heaps of ancient weaponry and it must have been terrible to be at the wrong end of them. After about an hour we started a slow stroll down the hill and unfortunately a few of the shops started opening and that slowed it to a crawl. I did end up with a wide leather black belt for 4 euro which was a good price and we got another couple of things also. Walking over the cobble stones and through the narrow streets will always stay with us.
At 11am we left for Venice and we had one roadside comfort stop on the way. The drive was very interesting and we followed the Adriatic coastline through to the largest Italian river "The Po. I remember this river being mentioned in many of the magazines i read about the NZs in Italy and seeing it as we did, makes one rethink the soldiers efforts during the war.
Traffic is not very heavy.
We got to Venice and our accommodation at the Hotel called the Michaelangelo and it has good size rooms. The hotel is about 8kms from the city.
At 5pm, 8 of us decided to visit Venice by public transport and look around. We walked for hours around the city, seeing the canals, markets and village squares, cathedrals and important buildings on on the south side of the city. We had a dinner stop but wasn't much good. At the moment i am really missing red meat and vegetables but we should be back into that before to long.
In the shops, i could not get over how many face masks and souvenirs there were on display. To make matters worse, every second shop had the same items and it was like this in shop after shop and yes - some of our shoppers had to check each one out. At this stage there were large crowds about and we finally bused home about 11pm. Got to bed about midnight.
