Where I stayed
A 6.15am wake up call and we left Venice at 8.30am. It was a nice place but we are pleased to be leaving. Weather great. Today we are going to Austria and staying in Vienna. We have a long trip ahead of us.
After 25 minutes we come across a traffic jam so our driver takes an alternative route on one of the secondary roads off the Motorway. What a wonderful surprise to see such a lovely country side in northern Italy and up to the Austrian border. Why would one live in the south of Italy when its so beautiful in the north? The fields and hills are so green, the rivers clear and it reminds one of the South Island. This has changed my whole opinion of Italy.
Eventually we got to the Austrian border and after traveling for an hour had a lovely lunch at a large roadside cafe which had fantastic views. It was just like in the South Island and the food was fantastic. Back to real food instead of spaghetti, and pizza. Yeh Yeh.
Once refuel led and underway, we were amazed at the many tunnels we had gone through. These Italians are great tunnelers although i already knew that as they have built many in NZ.
We had two more comfort stops and there was a noticeable improvement since we crossed into Austria.Cleanliness, order and Structures had also improved dramatically. Our lunch consisted of Gumbo soup and plenty of meat and a thick tomatoes in it. It was yummy followed up by a Bravos sausage. lovely slice of apple straddle cake filled me up. My type of healthy food. Forgot to mention the beer. All this looking out on beautiful scenery.
Then we had the highlight of the tour as we drove through the Austrian country side to Vienna. Yes - you guessed it. The Sound of Music DVD. Fantastic Eh. We had two screens on the Coach and it was great.
We reached Vienna about 5pm and our hotel accommodation was called the Hotel Kavalier. Yet another great choice by Cosmos and the hotel is great. A huge bath and a large room.
We had a restful 1.5 hours before we had to leave on an optional tour to the Hofburg Concert. It cost an extra $48US but was well worth it. Yes - us going to a concert in Vienna and not just any concert. It was at the Vienna Imperial Palace and we saw the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra. The environment was fantastic and the music played was composed by Johann Strauss as well as operas by Wolfgang Mozart. There was singing, dancing and humor mixed in and i cannot see how Cosmos made money out of it. We were supplied a DVD each as well. The show went for 1.5 hours and we really enjoyed it.
We also saw interesting side of Vienna in that we started counting the number of prostitutes on the way home which was surprising in a city like this.
When we got back to the hotel we watched TV for a short while before going to sleep. Another great day.
