Ah so this is where all the tourists have been hiding. The main drag in Ngombo was full of tourists. It was still raining when we got there and they like Cathy and I were walking around in their holiday clothes in the rain. My heart went out to them, they had come on a two week holiday to escape the winter and it had rained for 5 solid days. Sickening!! I had been here one month and it had rained for roughly two weeks of our stay. We are praying the weather in Burma would be better.
We had tried a few hotels when we arrived and they were all full, that was a first for me and Cathy. We were used to being the only guests in the hotels on our travels around the Island. We ended up with a home stay. It was very cheap and the room was very big and nice. We chose Ngombo to finish our tour as it is very close to the airport. We have pretty much covered the Island in our month here. The only part we did not cover is the far north and this was because we as foreigners are still not allowed up there. I would have liked to visit Jaffna but it was not to be.
Cathy and I found a souvenir shop and bought a couple of wooden carvings. One of them is a Monitor Lizard and he is a real beauty, the other is a turtle to remind me of my diving adventures. They came to £50 for the pair and that included postage. I would have paid that for the lizard alone he is that nice.
We have enjoyed our Sri Lanka tour and it was time to move on. We stayed two nights in Ngombo and on the morning of the 5th Feb we caught a flight back to K.L. and our excitement was building for our up and coming tour of Burma.
