We walked over to the terminal building at around 5 AM our flight was due out at 6:30 AM. People in this part of the world don't arrive at the airport hours early like we do in the UK and Cathy and I have got used to turning up much later at airports. I was totally miserable that morning, I was not well at all. The sickness had given way to Diarrhea mixed with stomach cramps and just generally feeling down. I don't think it was food poisoning but who knows.
The flight left on time and Cathy was soon tucking into her fried rice and my chicken Biryani. Strange things for breakfast I know but we are in Asia after all. I sipped a little water and felt sorry for myself. We arrived in Colombo with no mishaps and found a shuttle bus into town. This was an old Ashok Leyland bus like the ones you see throughout the Sub Continent. In other words a Twenty year old beat up thing with no A/C. Two hours later we were dropped off just outside Colombo railway station. I left Cathy with the bags and I went off to look for a hotel. I returned 20 minutes later after finding a hotel called the Hotel Nippon. They showed me a room and I said it was fine.We jumped into a Tuk Tuk and went straight there. It was not until we actually had a good look around our room that we realized what a bloody dump it was!!! I mean this place was filthy, utterly filthy and it smelt bad too. I should have sent Cathy to find a room as I was not really well enough to do the job properly. So to compound my misery of feeling bad, I had to feel like death in the worst hotel room I have ever stayed in!!! And that's no FUN. This room even had broken windows. The shower head must have been crawling with Legionnaires disease. I won't even try to explain what the shower curtain was like. The carpet smelt horrid and you had to wear shoes as you did not want to walk bare feet on it. WELCOME TO SRI LANKA.
As you can imagine I was really down at that moment.
We slept for a couple of hours then went out for a walk. This took us to the beach front and it was really quite nice. I will say one thing for Sri Lanka and that is it is very clean compared to India. It has not got streets strewn with rubbish as India has, I was very impressed with this. It really isn't as filthy as India either............. well apart from our room anyway. The one thing it has in common with India however is that you are looked upon as a walking talking ATM machine. The big rich white man who should throw money as one would confetti as you walk down the street.
We called into the Ramada Hotel on our way back to our dump for a bite to eat. I had chicken soup and it stayed in my body just long enough for me to get back to our room!! We decided that we should get the hell out of Colombo ASAP and this we did. The next morning we got on a train to Kandy.
I feel now after two weeks in the country that I have been a little harsh on poor old Colombo. When all is said and done I was feeling very poorly and I was the one who picked the hotel. If I had been feeling fine and we had stayed in a better hotel our experience would have been much better.
