Delhi Stopover
Entry 1 of 10 | show all | print this entry |
Saturday, November 03, 2007 Delhi Stopover Dear Readers: After many hours of travel, including about 8 hours pause in Frankfurt between flights, I arrive in Delhi this morning at 1:30am. The "heavy" atmosphere (a euphemism for smog) makes itself apparent even before exiting the plane. There is a smell like smoke in the air and a dense haze making it difficult to see anything. I am told that this condition is even worse in December. I imagine respiratory ailments are common here, as I'm coughing and wheezing with a sore throat right away. I connect with another guy on my tour in the immigration line, and chatting and getting to know each other helps to pass the time in a long and slow-moving line. Our luggage is waiting for us after we clear into the country, and we spot our transfer assistant right away after going through customs. A quick change of money and water purchase, and we're on the way to the hotel. Traffic is light, and we reach the hotel in about a half hour. We seem to be driving through a tattered residential section without many lights, and all of a sudden we are there. It is a modest hotel, but the rooms are good sized and the service is great. I hit the bed by 4:30am and get a much-needed 8 hours of sleep. I don't have a lot on my agenda today. Just a dinner meeting with a good friend in the travel industry who has been working with me for years up until the time he moved to work in the India office two years ago. In fact, the last time I saw him was here in Delhi two years ago. We spend a while catching up, and then go to the Shangri La Hotel for dinner. It is a fantastic place with an excellent restaurant. I have a salmon steak with rice and vegetables. Not Indian food at all! That's all right. I'll start my adventures in exotic eating after I go to Kathmandu tomorrow. This has been a wonderful rest stop along the way. I look forward to the adventure to come! Hugs, Dan
PS Having technical difficulties with a new 4GB card I bought for my camera. It isn't being recognized by my laptop, so I can't put any pictures up with this entry. I'll switch to my other card so I can show you some photos after tomorrow.
